It’s official, the iconic Signature Bridge is getting a sibling! Just this week (February 2026), the Delhi government dropped a major update that has residents of North East Delhi and regular commuters buzzing. To tackle the massive traffic bottlenecks that often turn the “Bridge of Pride” into a parking lot, a proposal has been fast-tracked to build a new bridge adjacent to the Signature Bridge.
Here is everything you need to know about this game-changing plan and why it’s the centrepiece of North East Delhi’s 2026 transformation.
Why Now?
While the Signature Bridge was a design marvel, the sheer volume of traffic from Karawal Nagar, Sonia Vihar, and Loni has pushed it to its limits. With the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway nearing completion and new RRTS (Rapid Rail) stations opening nearby, the government anticipates a “traffic explosion.”
The Trans-Yamuna Area Development Board has proposed two main options to the Public Works Department (PWD), Constructing a new road bridge right next to the current Signature Bridge to double the lane capacity. The Loha Pul Alternative: Replacing the ageing “Old Iron Bridge” (Loha Pul) with a modern, high-capacity structure slightly downstream to divert the load.
3 Reasons This “Twin Bridge” is a Big Deal
1. The “Expressway Link”
The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway is set to dump thousands of vehicles into Delhi every hour. Without this new bridge, the Wazirabad-Signature Bridge stretch would become a permanent choke point. This new plan ensures that high-speed travel doesn’t end the moment you hit the city limits.
2. Bye-Bye Bottlenecks at Civil Lines
In addition to the bridge, a ₹183 crore flyover is already being constructed between Civil Lines and the Signature Bridge. Together, these projects create a seamless “loop” that bypasses the chaotic Metcalf House T-junction.
3. Real Estate Goldmine
In infrastructure terms, bridges are “value multipliers.” Early data suggests that property queries in Yamuna Vihar and Bhajanpura have spiked by 12% since the bridge proposal was announced. Connectivity is finally catching up with the region’s population density.
What’s the Current Status?
The project is currently in the feasibility and design stage. The PWD is scanning the stretch from Old Wazirabad to Kalindi Kunj to find the exact coordinates that offer the best relief for commuters.
| Feature | Details |
| Proposed Budget | Part of the ₹23,850 Cr Decongestion Plan |
| Focus Area | Wazirabad to East Delhi |
| Current Stage | Feasibility study & PWD Review |
| Major Beneficiaries | Yamuna Vihar, Loni, Sonia Vihar, Maujpur |
This isn’t just a bridge; it’s a lifestyle upgrade. Combined with the Pink Line Ring Metro and the Yamuna Riverfront beautification, North East Delhi is shedding its “backward” tag. For the first time, it’s being treated as a strategic gateway to the capital.
